Early Work
Brett's initiation into the ceramic arts began while he was working as a contractor, in need of a healthy and enjoyable evening activity. Recalling a high school class where he worked with clay, he decided to enroll in a local community class at the "Mud Monkey" pottery studio in Ormond Beach, Florida. Quickly befriending the manager, he gained 24/7 access to the studio with the condition that he reclaimed the studio clay and mopped the floors.
This hobby soon evolved into a passion, leading him to construct his first kiln from a trashcan lined with refractory fiber blanket, and he utilized a roofing torch to reach temperatures of up to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit! Here, he began his first explorations with the Raku technique, which involves removing pots from the kiln at peak temperatures and then plunging them into combustible materials to create unique surfaces on the forms.
